trial #5 - execution

DAY 10 (evening)
Complex Population: 15

At 7PM, a tone rings out, but it's not Judy's voice that filters out over the intercom.

"TALLYING VOTES. . ."

The voice is mechanical and robotic, and a pause lingers in the air. It seems that the voting system is run by some kind of AI.

"CONSENSUS REACHED. MAJORITY VOTE. OVERSEER CIEL PHANTOMHIVE, EMPLOYEE ID VTMGMT62270567. STATUS: INNOCENT. CIEL, PROCEED TO THE JUDGEMENT THEATER. CHARGING..."

There's the sound of clicking, though it's not Ciel that receives the shock. Rhys, who had started to stir nearby, is the one to receive it. It seems there was a last ditch effort to try and save Ciel, at least for now... But at least as promised, when everyone leaves, you'll find (almost) every door in the Complex open.

"DESIGNATING EXECUTIONER. . . ALICE. ALICE, PROCEED TO THE JUDGEMENT THEATER. CHARGING..."

The second person will receive the same treatment. No one else will be able to step into the judgement theater after them without receiving a nasty shock before they can step too close, and once they're both inside, the door closes behind both of them. There's a clicking sound from the walls, and the panels on the right side of the room are pulled up to reveal a thick glass that allows you to look into the Judgement Theater.

It seems justice is meant to come from the the hands of the jury.

[ well, here's rhys. rhys who woke up during the whole... everything that happened but hung back because he knew how this was going. he knew the only thing that could protect ciel would not be him speaking up but this: them voting for ciel and triggering rhys' monitor instead. so, there's a bit of a relieved sigh as he finally, finally gets his wish and he doesn't hesitate as he walks straight into the execution room.

when he gets there, he'll pause in the middle of the room, taking a glance towards the window and then back to alice, arms crossed over his chest. ]

I'm not going to fight you but -- but I've been telling the truth, you know. That's why I left the notes for you and Alfendi. I needed you to know my information was good so you'd help with this.

You miscalculated.

[Alice examines the nailbat curiously, then allows its weight to settle into her hands as she advances on him, her expression growing icy.]

If you really wanted me to help you, then you should have given me a different name. I've been thinking it over, you know. And I might have heard you out, but after everything that happened...

[She narrows her eyes.]

I'm really going to enjoy killing you, Rhys.

[ he drags a hand over his face then, sighing deeply. of course. of course. fucking assholes, he thinks. ]

So... so, what? Getting everyone out safely? Stopping the experiment? That's not good enough for you because I gave you Bigby's name? Bigby was going to die no matter what happened, either by Judy or by us. He kept breaking the rules, he wasn't loyal, and we couldn't trust him. So was Elizabeth. Why do you think I gave you his name? I figured either you already knew or would know. Fuck, how -- how petty can you get.

[ but he doesn't move, just letting her approach regardless because whatever. this isn't the point anymore. his survival isn't the point. ]

No. Because you gave me information that was ultimately worthless.

[Her eyes flash.]

And it sounds like you knew it was worthless. You want me to thank you for giving me information we couldn't use? What does it matter if we knew he was staff, when he was going to die anyway? You gave me information that you thought was safe to give because it wouldn't be a risk for you.

That's the kind of cowardly, half-assed logic I hate about weaklings like you.

[ he just looks baffled and his expression twists into a snarl. ]

No! Why would I tell you what Ciel was planning immediately? If I did and you told someone, Judy would wipe out everyone here. I had to see what you did with the worthless information first. It's like -- it's like you're not even listening to me!

So you demanded that I trust you, but you wouldn't even really trust me. You were testing me.

[She narrows her eyes. Yeah, she's not listening to him. She passed the point of "not giving a shit about what Rhys was saying" when it started sounding like following his plan would get the graveyard - more specifically, Elizabeth and Bigby - wiped from existence permanently.]

Do you have anything else you want to spit out, or should I just kill you now?

Of course I was. You knew I was staff, how was I supposed to know you wouldn't just kill me instead?

[ but when she asks him what else he wants to say, he laughs and it's bitter and sad. they're going to fuck this up, he realizes, just because they're all so petty and vindictive. all of ciel's hard work is going to go to waste and he hates it. he hates it so much that his eyes turn wet and he has to press his hand to his face to keep himself together.

what else does he need to say? ]

Judy... Judy, I promised Veronica she could reveal her killer for a list of safe havens outside that they can travel to. She knows the world out there better than the rest of us. Please let her post the list, uncensored. And her killer too, but I don't really have much say in that, do I?

[ and then to the window, jeff in particular. ]

Jeff, you're the only one who heard me out and believed me. Thanks for that. I hope they keep you alive.

[ then back to alice, his final thing. ]

Voting for Judy would never kill Judy. She runs this entire complex, how stupid would that be? She would've just picked someone else, someone who was breaking the rules. Most likely, it would've been me. The dead were never in any danger but no one asked me. Even with the plan -- even with that, the dead would be fine. It'd be like a blink for them. But again, no one ever asked me, huh? Good job, assholes.

[ he shrugs then and lifts his hand, beckoning alice forward. ]

Go on. Get it over with.

[There is a part of her that wants to cut him off - to beat him until he's black and blue and can't talk anymore. But she waits. She waits, because the angrier she gets, the angrier her makes her, the better it will feel when she finally does kill him.

When he's finished talking, she doesn't hesitate.

She surges forward, nailbat in hand, and smacks him hard across his face, catching the skin of his cheek with the nails and raking it across as roughly as she can. Her strikes are vicious and brutal, and she pays no mind to the blood that she is no doubt getting everywhere.

...there's something deeply unsatisfying about a victim who doesn't fight back. There's no thrill, no challenge. Making Rhys suffer is fine, but she's getting bored.

Finally, she knocks him to the ground and straddles his chest to keep him in place, and brings the nailbat to his neck.]

Whatever you're hoping to find there? I hope you don't get it.

[She brings the bat down over and over again to crush his windpipe and leaves his throat cut open and raw. She's sure it's only a matter of time - if asphyxiation doesn't kill him, the blood loss will. Then she gets up and walks over to the door, calmly brushing off her clothing and smearing blood on it.

Once he dies and the door opens, she'll drop the bat and step right on out.]
