DAY NINE

DAY 9 Complex Population: 18 It's 8AM, and you wake from that deep, dreamless sleep that enforces curfew as always. There's breakfast available in the cafeteria if you want it, as well as meals from 11AM-12PM and 7PM-8PM, but otherwise? The day is yours. Take your time to explore the complex, relax, and enjoy each others' company, as who knows what the next day has in store? Though as you explore, you may notice that there's a few new doors unlocked and a new place for you to spend the day. Behind one door, you'll find a neat, tidy classroom. Like the Media Lab, none of the textbooks seem to cover anything past the 1940s, but if you'd like to do arts and crafts, the supply closet may be your place to spend the day. Across the walkway, there's also a small garden for growing fresh vegetables, so maybe you can finally be somewhat free of canned food. For once, there's nothing amiss about the Complex. — This post is for the first day as defined in the schedule. is the terminal we've all been voting from the only place to cast a vote?
because there were only nineteen of us around last trial and twenty votes were cast

It is not, no. There is one other location where a vote can be submitted.

so, someone who's gone missing whose body we haven't found yet could have voted from there...
is it behind a door that will open once our numbers get lower?

That is one possibility. This door will open when the threshold is reached.

It will also open if the Overseer is killed.

if i were to talk to everyone in the areas we have access to today, would i have spoken to the Overseer?
or is that person hiding somewhere we can't get to right now?

But I cannot answer that question. If you are pursuing the Overseer, there is very little I can say to reveal them.

Atrium - Early Morning;
[After talking to Judy at one of the terminals, Alice figures she should probably share what she's learned with the others, so she'll linger in the atrium where she can see people coming and going and will clap her hands to get people's attention as they walk by.]

Hey, did you notice anything unusual about the voting results yesterday?

Classroom - Morning;
[And now, time to explore! Alice is feeling much better today than she has since coming into contact with the fountain water - it looks like enough time has passed that whatever caused it has cleared up. She's fine with that. She'll just avoid the fountain water as best she can from on...

It's with renewed vigor that she heads up the stairs to check out what doors might have unlocked! ...and, hey, it's a classroom. She doesn't seem all that surprised at the setup - one-room classrooms are pretty common where she comes from - and she'll start poking around, thumbing through the textbooks and then raiding the supply closet for paper and pencils.

If you happen upon her while she's stockpiling them, she'll gather them into her arms and shoot you a suspicious look.]

Indoor Garden - Afternoon;
[FRESH FOOD, PARTY TIME.

...which is to say, Alice is harvesting vegetables, because there's no way she's going to pass up getting to eat something that doesn't come from a can. She has a feeling that if she comes back tomorrow, someone else will have emptied the garden first.

She won't take everything - on the off-chance she's wrong, she'd like to be able to come back and get more in the future. But she is going for enough to make a decent meal. When she hears footsteps, she speaks without bothering to look from where she's pulling up a carrot.]

If you help me gather these, I'll cook dinner tonight.

Community Kitchen - Evening;
[Anyone coming into the kitchen around dinnertime will find Alice tending to a pair of pots on the stove. They're both simmering nicely, though the one on the left certainly smells a lot better. On the counter there's a half-empty can of evaporated milk, an empty tin of canned beef, and the remains of chopped and peeled vegetables which are most likely the ones she harvested from the garden earlier that afternoon.

The pot on the left seems to have some kind of a creamy vegetable stew - the one on the right is the canned meat, cooking in a vegetable broth for flavor. She doesn't really want to combine them in a single pot in case the canned meat's flavor throws off the flavor of the fresh vegetables, but it can be added to individual bowls to try it, and then left out if it turns out bad.

To anyone who comes in, she'll say the same thing initially - ]

The food's almost ready.

[Then she'll turn away from the stove to face her company. If it's someone who helped her harvest vegetables, one of her apartmentmates, or Elizabeth or Angel, they'll be treated to a smile.]

Grab a bowl and help yourself once it's done.

[If it's anyone else, though - ]

You can have some if you do the dishes so I don't have to.

Inner Garden - Morning

[Well, here's a face that hasn't been seen around for a while. Or, rather, a personality that hasn't been seen around for a while (just so you know, his face, fortunately, is still the same). He's just standing in place, just basking in the UV lights and enjoying the tranquility that the place has to offer. Step up to him, though, and he'll let out a little yelp of surprise.]

Oh, goodness! Oh, you scared me, don't sneak up on me like that. [He says, clutching his chest, though he winces in pain when he does so - he's pressed his injured hand against himself by accident. Alfendi blinks awkwardly, unsure what to say next, except:]

Uh. Well, long time no see, I suppose...

Library - Afternoon

[If you thought Alfendi's Jekyll side was here to stay, well, you're wrong. Bad Alfendi's back, and he's here in the library poring through the titles - sometimes he takes one of them, flips through it, then tosses it behind him with a displeased noise.]

Ugh, none of this stuff is even worth reading...

[He might...accidentally toss a book back and hit you by accident if you're standing behind him. Sorry in advance???]

[Alice narrows her eyes.]

"Long time no see" is one way of putting it. But don't you have something else to say to me?

[Like, "Gee Alice, I'm sure sorry I tried to beat you up!" or something along those lines... she watches him expectantly and sort of warily, but it doesn't look like she really thinks he'll say sorry.]

[selfdenying]

[He just looks very uncomfortable, like a kid dozing off in class who's suddenly been called on to give an answer to a question he hasn't learned.]

Alice, I... [He presses his fingers against each other, avoiding her gaze.] Wasn't myself...the last time I was awake. I didn't mean it, I swear.

[selfsufficiency]

Don't do it again, okay?

[Part of her would still like to hit him, but... Luckily for him, she's been getting along really well with his Hyde side, so the somewhat positive association with his face stills her hand.]

Let's just say you'll owe me a favor, and we'll call it even. So, what are you up to in here?

[selfdenying]

[He just nods, clearly just glad to move on - it's not like he especially prides himself on the way he acted back then.]

Ah, well, I suppose the other one's had quite a bit of fun, hasn't he? [Just...looks mournfully down at his wounded hand.] I don't know, I just woke up here. It's rather nice, in my opinion...maybe he decided to take a break?

Inner Garden

[It has been a while, non-angry Alfendi. Dojima approaches]

Are you aware of everything that has happened since last time you were...hmm..."awake"?

[Complete with finger quotation marks]

Maybe he's just not into plants.

[If Alice were him and she came upon something boring, she'd sure check out, too.]

But if he's not going to hang around, that's his loss. [She casts a glance over the vegetables growing in the garden, then nods.] I bet I can make something good with this. Finally, we get to eat something other than slop or that canned stuff.

[selfdenying]

[He's angry too, he just smiles constantly so no one thinks he is.]

Well...I'm sure it'll be in my notebook. [He has it tucked under an arm.] It looks like he didn't throw it out yet, so one would hope he had the foresight to fill me in.

[selfdenying]

Maybe? Either way, I'm just glad not to be out of commission anymore.

[He nods again - though, honestly, this place interests him more than just a source of food.]

Yes, this is interesting, isn't it? And useful. Though, I can't stop thinking about that other room I just saw here...taking all those tissue samples must have taken quite a lot of work.

[selfsufficiency]

Do you think you'll stay that way?

[She still hasn't figured out exactly how to trigger the change between the two of them, which would be super useful to know, but it's not like they can safely experiment with it right now.]

You're right, probably. I wonder what they took them for? Maybe we can do something with them.

[Though if they're for a staff member's experiment she kind of wants to wreck them...]

There's something I'd to ask you about:

Tell me: how likely could it be the other Layton is a staff member?

[He isn't supposing Alfendi is a staff member in any way, but it'd be nice to have an answer about if it'd be possible one of Alfendi's sides could hide something like that from the other]

[He doesn't seem at all offended by the question. Instead he only lets out a hum and nods, like it's a perfectly logical thing to bring up.]

I have considered it, but I'm very willing to give him the benefit of the doubt. While it seems he is...well, a bit of a hothead, from my understanding, he hasn't done anything to threaten the lives of those around him.

[He almost looks a bit sheepish here because...well, HE was the one who tried to beat up Alice. The other guy didn't do that.]

I mean, I'll have to catch up and see what's happened, but I hardly think that I'd be a staff member at all. It would be too risky for me to have that role, given that switching between personalities seems, at best, random.

[selfdenying]

[His expression falls.] If I have to be honest? No. I don't think so.

[Honestly....the trigger between switching is, at best, connected to his emotions, and at it's worse, it's random. His mind likes to do whatever the heck it likes. It sucks that way.]

Probably as back-ups in case the main plants died out, I would assume. Imagine, if these grown plants got sick, we'd be left without fresh food, wouldn't we?

[Dojima considered the answer. It made sense, it'd be a great risk to make Alfendi a staff member, if anything because of the personalities. Other than that...

Dojima takes out a piece of paper]

Please make sure the other you receives this memo. I'd be nice if you didn't indicate I'm the sender, but feel free to note it was me. It's just a reminder of something he should keep in mind.

[If Alfendi checks it right now, he'll find just one single sentence:

'Are we completely sure Bigby Wolf is innocent?']

I think he's the one I could rely the most to keep an eye on Wolf.

[Better to have all bases covered, he guesses]

[Alfendi takes the paper, opens it, and arches an eyebrow. However, he makes no comment on it - he only nods, folding it as neatly as he can and slipping it in his notebook.]

Very well.

[You can count on him!]

If he appears again, I'll ensure he gets a reply to you somehow. [A pause.] Bigby is a very reliable man, but it's possible that my other side knows him better than I do. Is there a reason you suspect him?

I don't suspect him, exactly, but I don't like that he could coast along as if it was confirmed he's innocent. Better to keep all bases covered. If we leave even the smallest chance for the staff to take advantage on, they'll use it.

[Dojima crosses his arms]

Besides, Dickson and whoever his partner is may have a reason to instruct Kei to attack Wolf. That's what happened, if I remember right. Maybe I'm mistaken about what it was.

These days I feel I'm not as sharp as I should be.
