DAY NINE

DAY 9 Complex Population: 18 It's 8AM, and you wake from that deep, dreamless sleep that enforces curfew as always. There's breakfast available in the cafeteria if you want it, as well as meals from 11AM-12PM and 7PM-8PM, but otherwise? The day is yours. Take your time to explore the complex, relax, and enjoy each others' company, as who knows what the next day has in store? Though as you explore, you may notice that there's a few new doors unlocked and a new place for you to spend the day. Behind one door, you'll find a neat, tidy classroom. Like the Media Lab, none of the textbooks seem to cover anything past the 1940s, but if you'd like to do arts and crafts, the supply closet may be your place to spend the day. Across the walkway, there's also a small garden for growing fresh vegetables, so maybe you can finally be somewhat free of canned food. For once, there's nothing amiss about the Complex. — This post is for the first day as defined in the schedule. [Alice no, Alice stop, ALICE CALM DOWN. Sakyou just politely won't comment on her plant-based schemes, focusing instead on harvesting a couple more carrots. He's no farmer Enishi, but there's something soothing about a simple task like this.]

I think I saw sprouts over to the left that might be leeks. Would you like any of those?

Leeks? [She pauses to think about it, then nods.] Yeah. Those will work. Do you like them?

okay I was just curious. [No, actually, that's good information to have, but they can talk about that another time.

Anyway. It probably doesn't matter to Adam and Luke anymore, but there are things Leo would like to say, if this really is a postmortem letter exchange.]

I'm sorry. [For not being able to help Adam more, for not even being able to make the conscious decision to vote for him, if that was truly what he'd wanted--for a lot of things, things that would take far too much time to write out on this dumb machine.] and please tell luke I didn't vote for him. you both deserved better.

[He still doesn't like Luke by any means, but if the Overseer and Judy are the far bigger threats around here, then he's willing to dislike him a little less. ...Also Luke was not Rhys.]

I guess you could say that I find them a little nostalgic. The flavor is nice, anyway - more mellow than onions.

[Up another couple of carrots come, and then Sakyou shifts to stand, dusting dirt from his palms.]

I'll get a few of those, then.

Yeah we did. But it's not your fault. It's not really the staff's fault either. I think they were fed a lot of misinformation.

Sort of like how getting fed misinformation from Franziska made everyone decide to kill two people. Funny.

I'm not saying you shouldn't find them. But it seems like the Overseer knows a lot more than the rest of them so shouldn't they be the priority?

[Nostalgic leeks? Alice doesn't really get it, but she nods and moves to start harvesting some potatoes.]

A mellow flavor will work well. I think I saw canned milk in the kitchens, so if it's still there, I'll be able to make a creamy stew.

[The leeks would be better in that case, probably.]

[gambling really isn't his cup of tea, but at this point? it's not like there's much point to explicitly refusing.]

Is there even anything worth betting on? [though it's not exactly an acceptance, either.]

War, huh? Man, I haven't played that since I was a kid.

[not that it's a bad thing, just the game the adults would play with him when he was too young to understand things like poker. but that makes it kind of sound appealing, so he starts to shuffle the cards a bit before actually dealing the cards.]

[Alice smiles, setting the cards down before lacing her fingers together.]

We won't bet per hand - we'll just keep track of how many hands each of us wins. If I win more hands than you, you'll vote how I tell you to in the next trial. If you win more hands than me, I'll vote how you tell me to. How does that sound?

[You know, Adam, he's starting to get the weirdest feeling you didn't really like Franziska that much.]

I agree. Is there anything you know that might help us with that? You probably aren't allowed to share even if there is but I thought it would be worth asking. [He's keeping in mind everything you said, Adam, but it's worth a shot nonetheless.]

I can't even say I'm surprised you'd drive a bargain like that.

[this is definitely the worst kind of gambling, but it could be mutually beneficial, so...]

But it sounds like a deal to me. [the worst deal. a terrible idea. but alvin makes bad decisions all the time, and in a life or death scenario, he can understand a bit more why people would throw away plenty on a bet.]

After so many weeks of the other canned foods, something like that sounds incredible.

[NECTAR OF THE GODS... Even if it's just a stew with some weird biodome veggies and canned milk.

Sakyou moves over to harvest some leeks after that, though, working pretty efficiently.]

I was taught it because of its simplicity. The first time that I saw a deck of cards like this was a few weeks ago, so more complex games were a bit outside of my understanding...

[And then everything started going TURBOMURDER so he ended up not having any time to learn. Tragic. He'll wait politely for the cards to be dealt either way though, and then wait for Alvin to kick the match off.]

I doubt I can outright share anything. But if there's a way to help without that, we'll try. Luke's apparently been offering hints. Don't write him off.

What else are we supposed to bet on in this place?

[Even if they'd all come here with money from their respective worlds, it's not like it would have had any value.

Anyway, time to deal their cards! I hope I'm doing this right, because I'm bad at blackjack and I had to google it. Alice picks up the deck of cards and deals a card to Alvin - the Two of Diamonds. She deals a card to herself - the Jack of Hearts. Alvin's next card comes face-up and it's the Ten of Spades; she deals her next card face down and then smiles.]

Sooo... Will you stand or hit?

[Weird potentially poisonous biodome veggies and canned milk... what a way to go.]

It'll be good. I'm not a terrible cook.

[Decus is probably better at it, though, since she usually orders him around. But he's not here right now, so she'll just have to work this out for herself.]

okay. Can you tell me this? If you were still with us, where would you start looking?

[not that a guy with one foot can investigate rooms that thoroughly but still, they need a starting point.]

You mean in the complex? I don't know of any weak points or areas of interest. We can't see anything from here past curfew.

But I told you the sorts of people to look at in my letter. I stand by it.
