trial #2 - execution

DAY 4 (evening)
Complex Population: 32

At 7PM, a tone rings out, but it's not Judy's voice that filters out over the intercom.

"TALLYING VOTES. . ."

The voice is mechanical and robotic, and a pause lingers in the air. It seems that the voting system is run by some kind of AI.

"CONSENSUS REACHED. MAJORITY VOTE. TIE. RESULT 1. LARA CROFT. STATUS: INNOCENT. LARA, PROCEED TO THE JUDGEMENT THEATER. CHARGING..."

There's the sound of clicking, and Lara will receive a very sharp shock to their ankle monitor. If they don't step into the judgement room, the shock will increase in strength every ten seconds until they're unconscious. Regardless, the voice continues to drone on.

"RESULT 2. LUKE CASTELLAN, EMPLOYEE ID VTSCI62271053. STATUS: INNOCENT. LUKE, PROCEED TO THE JUDGEMENT THEATER. CHARGING..."

Luke receives the same treatment, and finally, the last player is decided in the same way:

"DESIGNATING EXECUTIONER. . . ELIZABETH. ELIZABETH, PROCEED TO THE JUDGEMENT THEATER. CHARGING..."

[ She misses and pitifully stumbles to one knee. She hisses out a wince, looking up to the woman with disbelief. Even if her face shows nothing but intimidation and forcefulness... Elizabeth's not use to that. Woman are humble and quiet - meek and mysterious. Never do they have the attitude this woman does so there's a conflict that time separates. ]

No - because this isn't some game to be won. You can show pity and empathy. You can factor in human nature - things they do when they're scared, alone, and desperate. Luke ... that boy was younger than me and had hand in murders. In getting us here, if we're to be believed.

[ She thinks of how Judy followed his command so easily and disarmed him and she gets to her feet. ]

People aren't going to listen to logic anymore than we're listening to Judy. She could be presenting us facts but we don't listen because she could care less.

[ Elizabeth cared about Luke's death more than she likes to admit and she's obviously starting to cry thinking about Lara's. ]

You're going to get yourself killed at this rate or make a lot of enemies beyond staff members.

[She looks, still angry, but genuinely taken aback at that. It doesn't surprise her that Elizabeth is angry with her - she can't fathom why, but she's sure it makes sense inside her foolish mind. People often are. But why is she yelling at her and yet expressing concern that she'll get herself killed or make enemies? She bangs her fist against the wall, trying to draw on some more of that confidence she relies on.]

Don't imagine me so pitiful that I could have failed to realize I've made myself a target. Is that not why nearly everyone else declined to share their votes, after all? Make no mistake. I understand the need to indulge in fear and desperation, but I am a von Karma. I have never let dangerous enemies prevent me from doing my duty. I will prosecute the staff, I will shed no tears doing so, and I will not preoccupy myself with soothing hurt feelings!

They're not pitiful! [ Elizabeth tries to defend. ] People are paranoid... people no doubtedly talked with Luke and seemed cordial or friendly with him... there's -

[ Well, also Adam... but she tries not to shift her gaze to him. ]

If you have the know-how and power to really do something here - do good... you're making enemies by your attitude and treatment. This isn't a case to be won, this is more impactful!

[ People are killed for the wrong choice. ]

Do you care who you voted for? Luke - Luke said we're not innocent when we've comprised ourselves into this role, voting for the wrong people. It's easy to lose sight that Lara is laying dead on the ground no more than 10 feet away because she tried to do the right thing. That's on me and it's going to be on you. If I wear her blood on my hands, you will too.

[ Elizabeth's emotional, closing her eyes to try and compose herself, she'll turn away from the woman. ]

Prosecute the staff, but if you get another innocent person killed.... I'll kill you myself.

[ And then she's off, because oh my god, she's never argued with a woman before like this and she's Tired. ]
