trial #2
![]() Complex Population: 32 At noon, the same tone from the morning rings out, and Judy's voice filters out over the intercom. "Good afternoon, residents. As per Safety Protocol 6227-A, it is time to conduct a trial to bring justice for the victim. Please proceed to the courtroom on the first level." Just as at night, if you don't go to the courtroom, you'll be treated to an electric shock of increasing strength until you go to the courtroom or are unconscious. Though considering the ominous penalty for not participating in a trial, you should likely just go rather than risk not voting because you've been knocked out by your own stubbornness... Once you're in the courtroom, you'll find that bottled water and light snacks are provided, but otherwise you'll have to bring anything else you may need. As you come to your conclusions about who to vote for, you can step into the judgement theater to cast your vote at the terminal. You may change your vote as many times as you'd like, but at 7PM, your vote (or lack thereof) is locked in. You have until 7PM to discuss and vote for who you think the murderer is. ic rulebook character statuses character profiles Voting will close at 9PM EST on 10/15. voting |

[...well then.]
More reliably than just asking did, when people don't want to tell the truth. Desperate times call for desperate measures, right~? ♡

[ Jack just has a moment of eloquence there, then makes a frustrated noise. ]
Wh- Why? You're- Oh my god, you're only old enough to go to college, why are you torturing people? And no, it doesn't! Desperate times mean you actually use your goddamn brain instead of your murder boner. [ wait ] Uh, generally speaking. It's just a saying.

It sounds like we come from really different places. Sometimes, where I come from, that kind of thing is necessary.
[Sometimes it's not and she still does it anyway, but you know...]
If you need information in order to stop something really terrible from happening, shouldn't you use every method you possibly can to get that information? Sure, if you don't torture someone maybe their blood isn't on your hands, but when that terrible thing happens, that's your fault for not trying hard enough. It's the same thing here.
I don't want to be killed, so I'll do whatever I can to catch the killer, even if it's unpleasant.

Alice has stumbled into a topic that's something of a sore spot for Jack, because those are the kinds of questions he'd been struggling with before coming here. There's something dangerous about doing what's right versus doing what's necessary, and that question being brought up gets his posture to tighten defensively, and his expression cools. It's thoughtful, but conflicted, but his answer actually comes fairly quickly. ]
'Cause- Because that's a slippery slope, kiddo. Doing what's right, being a hero, no one's gonna look twice at that! But-
[ He pauses, then reaches up to rub at the back of his neck with a frustrated noise. ]
...Look, I don't think we have to resort to anything that extreme. We've got stuff to work with. Opportunity. We don't need to torture people when we have other options.
[ so maybe it's not quite as emphatic of a 'no' as Jack would like to think ]
no subject
[Alice doesn't look all that bothered by the slippery slope argument - what seems to be bothering her is the idea that they have other options.]
We thought we had things to work with last time, but we were wrong. The person who didn't kill that boy was the one who we executed, and we still don't know anything else about the staff members.
I'm tired of not knowing. I'm—
[...doubling over with a coughing fit, apparently. She looks up at Jack once her coughing subsides, and her voice is quiet when she speaks.]
I just want to catch the bastards who are doing this to us.
no subject
[ Jack's emphatic on that point, almost pleading in tone, though it's quickly followed by a frustrated noise. He considers something, then shakes his head. ]
Because, yeah, I'm an engineer. Whoop-de-freakin-do, everyone can read my kickass profile. So. We've got a commissary, we've got a shop full of old as balls garbage, but it's not hopeless. I can work with it. I am working with it.
[ His brow knits together tightly, but he nods ]
I want to catch 'em just as much as you do, kiddo. But we don't need to- Look, we don't need to be on their level to do it.
no subject
...it's a little surprising, if she's being honest.]
They'll have an advantage over us, you know. If they're willing to kill, and we're not willing to fight back with all of our strength.
[She frowns.]
Even knowing that, you still think we can do this without sinking to their level?
no subject
[ Jack's expression is conflicted, and he looks to the side briefly as it twists up, but when he looks back to Alice, it's a much colder expression, but very confident. ]
So, no. We might not be able to. We might have to torture 'em and kill 'em. But being gungho to do that? That's a problem. That's not doing it because it's necessary, because that should be your last resort. If we truly don't have any other options? Then... Sure. I'll- I'm not gonna shy away from that.
[ He crosses his arms, then shrugs ]
But if we act like we're backed into a corner in the second trial, we're gonna lose. We have to be smarter than jumping to the last card in the deck right out of the gate.
no subject
At least he's not saying they can't torture and kill at all. That might very well be their only option in the end, and knowing that he wouldn't stop them from doing it at that point is something of a comfort.
But it's not like she likes waiting. Even if there are other options that might work, going straight to what should be the last resort is often faster. They only have so much time here, but...]
Fine. Fine, I guess we'll do it your way. For now.
[She can tell that she's not going to convince him.]
I still don't see any problem with striking out at them when they're already striking out against us, but... we can try the other options until you're satisfied that they won't work.
no subject
Yeah. Yeah, and- I mean, I know I'm kinda wasting time a little bit, but we've still got time, I think.
[ He sighs, since that's a pretty heavy topic, but he at least adds: ]
Thanks for, uh. Trusting me with that.
no subject
[Alice sighs again.]
Just... don't make me regret this. I really want to get the right person this time.

[TONE IT DOWN GIRL]

[There's only so many hours before voting, after all. While Alice would have no qualms about torturing someone innocent, she does want to figure out who did this, and if they run out of time before torturing the right person, that's no good.
Which probably isn't the reasoning Leo was going for while trying to convince her, but at least it had the same result??]
no subject
Thank you. I would appreciate it if you didn't incriminate yourself unless you're actually guilty. [DON'T MAKE HIM WATCH HIS FRIEND(???) DIE]
no subject
I'm not guilty, so you don't need to worry about that. I don't think the people here are stupid enough to vote for me.
[...she kind of has faith in them? A little? It's a very small amount of faith.]

[ oh right shijima's vote = still bought ]
no subject
[SHIJIMA'S VOTE IS UNDETERMINED since Alice's is too... who will this terrible duo vote for, only time will tell]
