trial #2

DAY 4 (afternoon)
Complex Population: 32

At noon, the same tone from the morning rings out, and Judy's voice filters out over the intercom.

"Good afternoon, residents. As per Safety Protocol 6227-A, it is time to conduct a trial to bring justice for the victim. Please proceed to the courtroom on the first level."

Just as at night, if you don't go to the courtroom, you'll be treated to an electric shock of increasing strength until you go to the courtroom or are unconscious. Though considering the ominous penalty for not participating in a trial, you should likely just go rather than risk not voting because you've been knocked out by your own stubbornness... Once you're in the courtroom, you'll find that bottled water and light snacks are provided, but otherwise you'll have to bring anything else you may need.

As you come to your conclusions about who to vote for, you can step into the judgement theater to cast your vote at the terminal. You may change your vote as many times as you'd like, but at 7PM, your vote (or lack thereof) is locked in.

You have until 7PM to discuss and vote for who you think the murderer is.

Wishful thinking. People are concerned with keeping themselves safe and secure - hidden, blending in. Even if a non-staff member voted, it's a bad judge of character to show who voted for Diva. Could cause a lot of problems.

I disagree. I will personally ensure no accusations fall on the person who voted for Diva if they come forward now.

That's a bold claim. [ She's actually a bit curious. ] Don't tell me you're moonlighting as some vigilante protector.

Nothing of the sort. I am a prosecutor, however. It is my duty to ensure this trial proceed acceptably.

It would be the right thing to do. So far our theories are based off one staff member possibly voting for Diva. We need to know if we're wrong.

If the person isn't a staff member and they want to end this as much as we do, they'd help.

... But it's seeming like it was staff.

I get your theory and I agree with it, but some people don't have the nerve to make the hard choices. People could have panicked and now that guilt weighs on them.

[ It's a shame, honestly. Her suspicions are one of the younger girls... ]

Worst case scenario, we keep thinking it's staff and never have to worry about the abstaining process again.

What do you think we have to worry about now, though? Is there anyone we can vote for at this point?

It goes by majority vote, right? If someone admits, that's going to create a tension in the air. If the staff members - how many there are - see an opportunity to scapegoat someone, they'll take it. Their votes versus our divided votes - they could luck out.

That's far too risky for them to try. They would have to actually point the finger at the person who confesses, which would put just as much suspicion on themselves.

But ultimately, I don't understand why you're trying to make it more fearful for the person who might want to come forward.

[ Well that sure as hell is a clapback. ]

Oh? You think so? I'm bringing up a valid thought process. For the record, since I was the one who convinced Alvin to talk to Judy and brought this whole abstaining thing to light, I abstained as well.

[ Only seemed right. ]

I'm use to having a lot of guilt, but maybe someone isn't. When Diva was revealed as innocent, that must be a hell of a thing to feel when that 1 vote was revealed.

[ She shrugs. ]

Just something to chew on.

[ She certainly seems to have a big ego. He keeps that in mind. ]

It's not like they were the only person to not abstain. Diva, no matter what, would have voted for Bigby. They didn't change all that much.

That much was to be expected. [ But, she frowns a bit. ] Point being... there's going to be a target on someone's back. If it's staff, it's staff.... but if there's the odd chance someone voted in fear or confusion, I'd much rather them not become enemy number one.

[ Because she totally anticipates that. ]

That's your opinion. Ms. von Karma and I have already explained why that wouldn't be the case. If you want to ignore us, go ahead.

Right. [ She doesn't want to even partake in this. She turns, looking away. ] Unless there's some alternative way to keep the volunteer safe, I have nothing else to add.
