trial #2

DAY 4 (afternoon)
Complex Population: 32

At noon, the same tone from the morning rings out, and Judy's voice filters out over the intercom.

"Good afternoon, residents. As per Safety Protocol 6227-A, it is time to conduct a trial to bring justice for the victim. Please proceed to the courtroom on the first level."

Just as at night, if you don't go to the courtroom, you'll be treated to an electric shock of increasing strength until you go to the courtroom or are unconscious. Though considering the ominous penalty for not participating in a trial, you should likely just go rather than risk not voting because you've been knocked out by your own stubbornness... Once you're in the courtroom, you'll find that bottled water and light snacks are provided, but otherwise you'll have to bring anything else you may need.

As you come to your conclusions about who to vote for, you can step into the judgement theater to cast your vote at the terminal. You may change your vote as many times as you'd like, but at 7PM, your vote (or lack thereof) is locked in.

You have until 7PM to discuss and vote for who you think the murderer is.

...

[He listens to her carefully, his mouth twisted down in a slight frown. She's been watched before? That's...well, he can certainly understand why she would feel like she feels now. The paranoia must be stifling.]

I see, Elizabeth. [He sighs.] It's all quite convoluted, in my opinion. You bring up a good point - if they really were doing this to get results, why do it on their own? Why be part of the group? Unless they feel they need to manipulate things on a personal level...

[He shrugs, his gaze turned to the floor, his look pensive.]

Well, consider this. Judy seems perfectly fine with letting these staff members die - I'd almost hazard to say that's her purpose on it. However, can we trust what she says? We don't know. And why are the staff members going along with this, if, as you say, it's a risk for them? Is this a game they intend to win? The last person standing is staff?

[A pause.] Whatever is going on, it's all completely a mess. It seems there are too many sides of the Rubik's cube we cannot see, in this dreadfully morbid puzzle.

Maybe they do. Maybe they're not getting the answers or results they want.

[ The staff members can't be all too pleased if they continuously go forth and find variable after variable unbefitting to their needs. Despite the touchy subject, Elizabeth tries to hold her ground, keep her strength up. ]

Judy has the power despite claiming she's a lowly worker. Something to consider. There's a lie there. [ The sudden explosion of questions makes her laugh, lifting a hand up. ] Alfendi, hold one moment, I can barely keep up!

[ Why was she laughing at a time like this? ]

You're posing my questions than answers. Are you content collecting them at this point? [ It's teasing, but back at it: ] The thing is? We could have the advantage in numbers while they merely have the advantage in knowledge. Luke spoke to me yesterday about how all it takes is one person to change the tide of history - to start a revolution. While I'm not too fancy on the idea of something as romantic as that... we have to understand our own power here too.

That's rather morbid. They have to murder again to get a result?

[Ergh...the thought makes his stomach turn.]

Judy is not our friend. She's friendly, but she's not showing her hand. Or her face. The point is, she's not telling us the whole truth, and we need to take her words with a grain of salt.

Oh, goodness, sorry. [He says, sheepishly rubbing the back of his head.] I admit, I got a bit carried away there...but you have a point. I doubt there are many of them among us. We have the power to weed them out while they must struggle to defend themselves and keep to the shadows.

As long as we don't give up hope...we'll get them soon enough. I'm sure we will.

Hope can rot away with time and time seems to be a rarity among here.

[ She speaks in a wisdom far beyond her years, if her profile card indicates anything. ]

The point is making sure they're pressed back against. If we can find one of the staff members, we're able to show them we can't be messed with. This, in short, will put the pressure on them and that is when they get sloppy.
