We are better at treating the term as a euphemism for a gang of cold blooded murderers of inscrutable motives. Theorizing about motives when we know so little is likely to lead us in the wrong direction.
All we know is that we can kill the staff at trial, though logic or through luck. So the only motive we can be assured of is that they will work to minimize our chances at both logic and luck. Anything that could lead us to reason out their identity or happen upon it is something they would not do - unless, that is, it was a mistake they made in the process of trying to stop us applying reason or luck in a different direction.
